Oregon Ski Area's Indefinite Closure Continues for Presidents Day Weekend
The powder taps are turning back on across the West, but for Hoodoo Ski Area, Oregon, the return of winter hasn’t proven fruitful enough quite yet.
“We did get a good amount of snow in the last storm and we’re very thankful for it,” the ski resort wrote in a recent social media post, noting that the lifts won’t spin over Presidents Day weekend. “However, it’s not enough to reopen.”
Hoodoo added that it’s watching the forecast and that there’s “good stuff” on the horizon. OpenSnow, a forecasting service popular among skiers, agrees: they expect well over a foot of snow to fall at the ski area in the next ten days.
“We will remain closed until we get a new snow storm and are able to open safely. Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing you soon,” Hoodoo’s message concluded.

The ski area previously announced an indefinite closure, writing in a web message, “We have surveyed the terrain many times over the last few days and, sadly, have to make the call to close until Mother Nature blesses us with more snow.”
Webcam photos from the ski area at that time showed thin snow coverage that was more reminiscent of spring than winter. The small Oregon mountain wasn’t alone. In Government Camp, Mt. Hood Skibowl also had to suspend operations amid the lack of snow.
And across the state, the picture remains grim, with the snowpack plunging well below normal. That may lead to a challenging year for farming, communities, and hydropower facilities, OPB reported. It could cause a longer-lasting wildfire season, too.
The outlet added that, according to Larry O’Neill, Oregon’s state climatologist, it’s unlikely the snowpack bounces back at this point.
Still, the ongoing stretch of wintry weather is set, at long last, to improve the skiing conditions. Even as Hoodoo remains closed, its webcams look more seasonally appropriate, with some snow on the ground.
In places, skiers can already enjoy the freshened-up slopes.
Timberline Lodge, according to an Instagram post, picked up more than a foot of snow earlier this week. Mt. Hood Meadows saw a welcome reset, too. Those resorts, like Hoodoo, are also included in the next round of storms.
