Jasper Rises from the Ashes
The statistics speak for themselves:
- 358 out of 1,113 structures in Jasper destroyed
- The population of 25,000 evacuated
- $880m in insurance payouts
- Millions of dollars of tourism wiped out
- An estimated $1.23 billion of damage
- The Alberta and Federal governments supplied $170 million in aid
We reported on it at the time on PlanetSKI:
The fire was started by a lightening strike in July 2024.
On July 22nd all the residents were evacuated and the evacuation order remained in force until August 17th.
The fire was not declared officially out until April 2025 as it continued to burn and smoulder underground.
One firefighter died.
The town continues to bear the scars.

Driving to the ski resort of Marmot Basin is a surreal experience and where the strength and impact of the fire sinks in.

Another fire approached the town from the north and at one point they joined to make things much worse.

The people that lost their homes now live in these units, that look more like shipping containers than homes, as re-building goes on.
They prefer to stay.

The locals that we have spoken to remain optimistic, and defiant.
“It could have been so much worse as the hospital, schools, law courts and other essential service buildings were not burnt down,” said one local to us.
“The whole town could have been consumed by flames, but it wasn’t and we will re-build.”
As well as the re-building new precautions are being put in place with huge firebreaks now being built around the town.

It is perhaps shutting the door after the horse has bolted, but Jasper is looking to a long future and some regard the fire as another event in the town’s history and simply an act of nature.
It may happen again.
Nature is also fighting back.
“Last summer when he grass grew and wild flowers appeared again, we had a feeling of hope for the future,” another said to us.
And standing defiant in the centre of town is the wooden totem pole.
A symbol of survival and the future.
