April Skiing? There’s Time for One More Trip!

As winter loosens its grip, the mountains take on a different kind of magic. Longer days, quieter slopes and a mellow, unhurried atmosphere make April one of the most rewarding times to ski. It’s a season that rewards a little strategy but get it right and you’ll enjoy some of the best value, best snow and best vibes of the entire ski season!

So, before you pack away your thermals, here’s why April deserves a place in your ski calendar. By April, daylight stretches late into the afternoon. Many resorts keep lifts open later, giving you more time on the mountain, often at a reduced price too. Whether you want to rack up the miles or take a leisurely approach, the extra daylight and greater value is a gift.

Spring brings a different rhythm to the mountains. Mornings often start crisp and grippy, perfect for carving. By midday, the sun softens the snow into a forgiving, playful surface, ideal for cruisy laps and confidencebuilding turns. You can still get big snowfalls, especially on higher slopes, then when the weather settles, you get those iconic bluebird days that make skiing feel effortless.

This is the season of long lunches, sun terraces, and après that starts in sunglasses rather than ski jackets. Resorts host endofseason concerts, DJ sets, and slopeside parties. It’s skiing with a celebratory twist

Chasing the Snow

Late-season skiing is all about elevation and orientation. In the Alps, that usually means choosing resorts with plenty of terrain above 1,800 metres, ideally with a glacier in the mix to guarantee cold, chalky snow well into April.

Wherever you go, expect the classic spring rhythm: firm, fast pistes first thing, softening gradually as the sun climbs. Early starts pay off, leaving long afternoons free for lingering terrace lunches, spa sessions or swapping skis for hiking boots or bikes.

But while spring is known for its freeze–thaw cycle, it’s also delivered some of the deepest storms of recent years, with early April often marking the peak of the season’s snowpack before the thaw sets in. Many resorts actually operate more terrain in April than they do in December.

That’s certainly the case for Cervinia, which really comes into its own in April. Sitting high on the Italian side of the Matterhorn, it’s one of the Alps’ most snowsecure destinations, with around 90% of its terrain above 2,000 m and lifts climbing to a remarkable 3,883 m on the Plateau Rosa, Europe’s highest lift-served point. That altitude alone makes it a standout for April skiing, but the added bonus is its seamless link with Zermatt, creating one of Europe’s largest and most varied crossborder ski domains.

The high, open slopes above Cervinia are tailormade for spring conditions. Beginners have space to learn on gentle, sunkissed pistes that stay in great shape thanks to the cold nights at altitude. Intermediates, meanwhile, can roam for miles on long, confidenceboosting runs with bigmountain scenery at every turn. The famous Ventina red is the signature descent of the season, an 11kilometre glide from glacier height all the way to the village, often offering perfect corn snow by late morning.

Off the slopes, Cervinia’s broad, southfacing valley catches the afternoon sun, giving the resort a relaxed, almost beachday feel as spring progresses. Long lunches, lateday drinks and Matterhorn views round off the experience.

It’s one of a number of resorts that, thanks to glaciers, northfacing slopes and high-altitude terrain,  hold their snow exceptionally well into late April. Crystal Ski Holidays recommended lateseason destinations are chosen specifically for their reliability.

Price Drop

As soon as people start thinking about beaches instead of black runs, late season becomes one of the smartest times to book a ski break. Resorts are often a little quieter, the days are longer and sunnier, and there can be better availability on flights and accommodation, which can mean better value overall. There are also less obvious savings and benefits, from calmer airports and smoother transfers to end-of-season sales in resort shops, ideal if you’re eyeing up new kit for next winter. And while lift-pass prices are set locally and vary by resort and date, booking your trip early and keeping an eye on what’s included can still help you get the best deal for your week.

St Anton shines at this time of year. Its altitude and wealth of northfacing slopes help preserve snow quality long after many other resorts have turned slushy. For confident skiers, it’s a dream: steep, challenging pistes, bigmountain terrain off the Valluga, and long, satisfying descents that stay grippy in the morning before easing into that classic spring softness by midafternoon. The mix of wintery conditions up high and mellow, sunsoaked skiing lower down gives lateseason days a wonderfully varied rhythm.

The atmosphere in town is just as compelling. Even in April, St Anton’s après scene is in full voice, with the legendary après-ski bars the MooserWirt and Krazy Kanguruh (which has had a major facelift this season) delivering their trademark blend of terrace sunshine, tabletop dancing and live music. It’s lively without feeling frantic, and the longer days make it easy to stretch out those golden hours after skiing.

Spring also brings one of the region’s most iconic and spectacular traditions: The White Thrill, a massstart race from the Valluga that blends endurance, speed and pure Alpine theatre. Whether you’re taking part or simply watching the spectacle unfold, it’s a brilliant finale to the season and a reminder of why St Anton remains such a standout choice for a lateseason escape.
