Skiing Is Sport People Most Want to Take Up Again
New research has revealing that skiing is the number‑one hobby Brits want to return to.
A nationwide study commissioned by Crystal Ski Holidays found that nearly eight in ten adults (78%) hope to revive once‑loved pastimes, with skiing topping the list of activities they most want to take up again.
The findings highlight how 69% of UK adults have abandoned hobbies over the years, particularly sports and physical activities. One in three respondents said skiing was something they had stepped away from, while more than half (56%) had skied only once or twice. Nearly one in five (19%) said they hadn’t skied in years but would like to return.
Emotional connection plays a major role in the desire to get back on the slopes. Almost a quarter (24%) said skiing boosted their confidence, 22% said it made them feel younger, and 21% missed being in the mountains. Others cited the sense of freedom (20%) and the joy of being active without it feeling like exercise (14%).

However, several barriers are holding people back. Fear was a bigger obstacle than ability for 84% of respondents, while 38% said they lacked someone to join them. Family commitments (28%), feeling “rusty” (22%) and worries about embarrassment were also common concerns. Encouragement matters: 38% said they would be more likely to return if they saw people their own age taking part, and 35% wanted a pressure‑free environment.
If these barriers were removed, an overwhelming 96% said they would happily return to their old hobbies.
To help former skiers reclaim their confidence, Crystal Ski Holidays has launched a nationwide search for “Britain’s Rustiest Skier”. The competition invites lapsed skiers—whether they’ve been away for two years or twenty, to share why they stopped, what they miss, and why they’re ready to return. The winner will receive a £3,000 voucher to get back on the mountain in style. Entries run until 28 February.
“Life has a habit of getting in the way, but the desire to return to hobbies like skiing never truly disappears,” said Scott Britton, Head of Crystal Ski Holidays. “For many people, the real barrier isn’t fitness or ability, it’s confidence. Once you’ve learned to ski, those foundations stay with you. We’re here to help people rediscover the mountains at their own pace.”
