25-Year-Old Found Dead In The Ocean At Maine’s Acadia National Park

Walking between Bar Harbor and Bar Island in Acadia National Park.

Tragic news out of Acadia National Park where the body of a 25-year-old man was recovered from the ocean near Bar Island on Thursday, January 29th.

According to the National Park Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, Maine Warden Service, Maine Marine Patrol, and Maine Association of Search and Rescue (MASAR) responded to a report of an individual believed to be stranded on Bar Island on Wednesday, January 28th, at around 5pm. They were unable to find the individual upon their arrival.

Federal, state, and local first responders spent the night searching using K-9 resources. Thursday morning saw the resumption of search operations with assistance from the National Park Service, Maine Marine Patrol, Maine State Police and Maine Warden Service. Sadly, late Thursday morning, the individual was located deceased.

For 1.5 hours before and after low tide, Bar Island is connected to Bar Harbor by a gravel bar, allowing visitors to hike between the two areas. However the bar is covered by the ocean throughout most of the day and those who find themselves on the island after the bar is gone must wait 9 hours until the bar emerges again to safely cross back.

An investigation into the fatality is currently being led by the National Park Service. No further information will be released until 72 hours after notification to next-of-kin. Our thoughts and condolences are with the friends and family of the deceased at this time.
