Katmai National Park has officially launched their 2026 Brooks Camp bear pin contest, inviting local talent to design this year’s bear etiquette pin.

Southwest Alaskan residents of all ages are encouraged to submit a design for the pin, with the winning design becoming the official Katmai bear pin that tens of thousands of visitors will wear this summer. The winning designer will receive a set of pins in addition to the satisfaction of seeing their artwork worn by visitors from around the world.

“Bear pins reinforce the park’s safety training and the pins become treasured souvenirs that remind over 20,000 visitors of their trip to the park.” – Katmai Superintendent Mark Sturm

The unique bear pins generally feature bears and other natural and cultural wonders of Katmai, awarded to visitors who complete the mandatory bear safety training (bear school). Limited-edition and multi-colored bear pins are awarded to visitors who show responsible behavior around bears at Brooks Camp as well.

The Bear Pin competition first began in 2017, showcasing the artistic skills of Southwest Alaskan residents. Those hoping to participate should submit their designs via email at KATM_visitor_information@nps.gov by February 26, 2026. Full contest rules can be found here.
