Did You Know Long Island Used To Have A Ski Area?

Long Island, New York — This past weekend brought snow to places that don’t see it quite often. This included the New York City metropolitan area, which once had lift-served skiing on Long Island.

Long Island has had lift-served skiing in the past, with the most notable operation being the Bald Hill Ski Bowl. Operating for around 15 years, the ski area featured three trails and three lifts (including a T-Bar) with a vertical drop of 200 feet. According to Newsday, lift tickets cost only $1. There was also an area for sledding.

The ski area last operated in 1980. During its final season, it only operated for eight days. After that dismal winter, the town decided not to fund the facility, leading to its closure.

While the Ski Bowl operated only from 1965 to 1980, it left a strong legacy. Today, the site is home to the Brookhaven Amphitheatre and Cultural Center, which hosts concerts and other events. The ski area’s old lodge is also used as an event space. The access road to Bald Hill is still known as Ski Run Lane.

Interestingly, it wasn’t the last attempt at lift-served skiing on Long Island. In the 2000s, a proposal was made to convert a former defense facility into an indoor ski resort, among other attractions. According to Syracuse.com, the proposal was cancelled by town officials in 2010 over missed payments.
