Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) celebrates its birthday on Monday, January 26th, marking 111 years of protection, adventure, discovery, and so much more.

The park was formally established on January 26th, 1915, upon President Woodrow Wilson’s signing of the Rocky Mountain National Park Act. Naturalist, nature guide, and lodge owner Enos Mills pushed for the creation of the national park beginning in 1909, stating he hoped that “in years to come when I am asleep beneath the pines, thousands of families will find rest and hope in this park.

The park’s 265,807 acres feature a range of mountain environments from meadows to alpine lakes and towering peaks. Over 300 miles of hiking trails fill the area, providing endless ways to explore and view wildlife.

RMNP has seen millions and millions of visitors throughout its life. Campers, hikers, wildlife watchers, and many more have explored its mountain reaches. Today education rangers, law enforcement rangers, carpenters, mechanics, biologists, administrators, engineers, resource specialists, and volunteers all work to manage the park and keep it in good condition for future generations to come.

Happy 111th Birthday Rocky Mountain National Park!
