A Massive Storm Just Delivered Feet of Snow to East Coast Ski Areas

The northeastern United States continues to have an incredible ski season, while many mountains out west are still hurting for snow. After a bit of a dry spell in mid-January, this most recent storm cycle brought another round of significant precipitation to much of the northeast and New England.

Mountains across Maine, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, and other parts of the East racked up impressive snow totals, particularly heading into Monday, January 26.

Much of the East benefited from this past storm, but like always, some places did better than others.

Connecticut’s Sundown Mountain saw a whopping 24 inches of snow falling before Monday morning. However, the border of Maine and New Hampshire also wasn’t a bad place to be, with Maine’s beloved Sunday River seeing 20 inches and Black Mountain, New Hampshire, getting 18 inches.

Although their snow totals aren’t exactly skimpy, Vermont didn’t get quite as much in this storm, with Jay Peak totaling around 14 inches.

Here’s a roundup of some of the ski areas that benefited the most from this last storm cycle, where you might find the best turns this week, and which spots are expected to keep getting snow.

Looking Ahead

This storm is looking like it’ll leave and move offshore as quickly as it came.

The biggest snow totals across much of the East have already fallen, so if you’re able to sneak out for some Monday laps, get after it while it’s good. Some places will see lighter snow continue to fall through Monday night, particularly in the Green and White mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont. Ski resorts in these areas could pick up an additional 2-5 inches of snow going into Tuesday morning. The Vermont mountains, Smuggler’s Notch and Stowe, are forecasted to receive another 7 inches over the next five days.

Central Vermont and western Maine could see slightly warmer temperatures (albeit still sub-20 degrees) in the middle of this week, but things should cool back off into the 0-10 degrees range before this upcoming weekend. More snow could come back into New England and the eastern US on Sunday, February 1, but like this last storm, it’d be a quick drop before another quieter weather pattern.

In short, if you can get out for some mid-week turns, definitely take advantage while it’s a little warmer, and there’s still some fresh pockets to ski.
