Another Avalanche Death in the Alps

The avalanche accident happened on the north face of the Cime du Sambuis, in Maurienne on Friday at 3pm.

The victim was part of a group of three skiers from Chambéry and Lyon.

The first skier went down the slope without incident but the second was carried away by an avalanche and he was thrown against rocks.

The other two skiers alerted the rescue authorities.

“The skier was carried away by a wind plate above rock bars,” and could not be resuscitated despite the intervention of the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon of Savoie (PGHM) and a Samu doctor, said the prefecture in a statement.

The authorities continue to advise that people use extreme caution off piste with a generally unstable snow pack.
