Mexico’s First Female Cross Country Skier Qualifies for 2026 Winter Olympics

Dr. Regina Martinez Lorenzo

Congratulations to Dr. Regina Martinez Lorenzo who has qualified to represent Team Mexico at the 2026 Winter Olympics becoming the first woman to represent Mexico in cross-country skiing.

Dr. Martinez started cross-country skiing while studying medicine in Minnesota. The certified emergency-room doctor relishes in the sport’s combination of physical endurance and mental sharpness, things she is well acquainted with in her professional life:

“Medicine has helped me immensely. It’s a long career with no instant gratification. You’re constantly pushed to your limits, making critical decisions, facing difficult realities. That gave me emotional and mental strength, and I’ve transferred that directly to skiing.”

The Mexico City-born skier will join a small contingent of Mexican representatives in Olympic cross-country skiing including Roberto Alvarez (Calgary 1988 & Albertville 1992) and German Madrazo (PyeongChang 2018).

There a tons of stories to keep an eye come February when the best athletes in the world descend upon Italy and while ski racing fans might be focused on Lindsey and Mikaela, keep an eye out for Dr. Martinez as she makes her historic debut. Very cool. Salud!
