Nothing Beats The Chaos Of Rope Drop At Snowbird, Utah

Snowbird rope drop.

One of the wildest and scariest experiences in skiing is that of a packed rope drop. People pack the lines, waiting for ski patrol to finish their avalanche control and get the party going. The rope drops and everyone goes at once, creating an avalanche of humans down the mountain. It’s incredible to be a part of, but it’s almost as incredible just to watch.

Snowbird in Utah is arguably the capital of rope drops, with the opening of Mineral Basin causing a swarm like no other. Hundreds of people will likely be in attendance when it opens up, some waiting for hours just to get the experience. It’s both impressive and horrifying at the same time.

A significant portion of Mineral Basin, Snowbird’s backside, is currently open to skiers and snowboarders, with everything from greens to double blacks available. However there doesn’t seem to be much snow in the forecast over the next several days, so finding a proper powder run or rope drop won’t be the easiest this weekend.
