Vonn Heads to Winter Olympics but Hirscher is Out
Lindsey Vonn won four World Cup overall championships. She took the gold medal in the downhill at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Marcel Hirscher is a record eight-time World Cup overall champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist.
They both retired at the peak of their powers in 2019 and went down as legends of alpine ski racing.
Last season they both returned.
41-year old Vonn has had a fairy tale comeback that befits a team of Hollywood scriptwriters.
She has had two victories in Downhill this season and is a favourite for gold at the Milan- Cortina Winter Olympics that takes place next month.
Last weekend she extended her record as the oldest race winner in the 60-season history of the World Cup circuit.
Her 84th career win on the circuit was her record-extending 45th in downhill.
She is back on the front cover of ski magazines.

For Marcel Hirscher, 36, it is an altogether different story.
He blew his ACL in training last season and this winter he has been out of form.
He has decided to end his effort to make a comeback in the Milan-Cortina Olympics.
“The truth is it’s not possible at the moment,” said Hirscher.
“The pace which I can go right now is not on a World Cup level.”
He signed off by telling fans he hoped they would see him race next season.

Despite the setback, Hirscher remains one of the greatest ever alpine skiers and his legacy is intact.
All eyes are on Lindsey Vonn and what she may be able to achieve in Italy.
The women’s downhill is now one of the most eagerly awaited events of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
That is due to one athlete – 41 year old Lindsey Vonn.
Who’d have though it?
