"That Kind of Airtime Is Insane": Skier's Huge Jump Goes Viral

I’d venture that your average skier prefers to stay on the snow.

Yes, a mogul here or a small jump there can produce some welcome air time, but entering orbit is, by and large, reserved for professionals and true thrill seekers.

This skier, who goes by @tommy._.ski on Instagram, is among their ranks. In a recent, jaw-dropping clip, he estimated that he floated between 40 and 50 feet into the air, traveling over 100 feet.

Sound absurd? It is. See the video below and remember, please don’t try this at home. This is beyond expert-level stuff.

Some ski videos, like this one, can be judged on their audio alone. First, you hear the sound of flapping outerwear—a sure sign that whoever is in front of the camera is moving fast. Then come the cheers, indicating that whatever just happened was beyond belief. I’d be hollering, too, if my friend launched as far as a ski jumper.

As is often the case, @tommy._.ski’s post prompted more than a few shocked reactions in the comments.

“The airport tried to contact you,” one commenter wrote.

“That kind of airtime is insane,” wrote another.

Even camera company GoPro chimed in, writing, “Antigravity cheat code for sure.”

Ski fans might notice similarities between this clip and another viral video shared in 2023 featuring Jordane Legal, who cruised an improbable distance through the air. He offered a nod of approval to @tommy._.ski and the big jump, simply writing “parfait.”

Instagram, as always, remains a trove of wild ski videos. They’re fun to watch, of course, but I do my best not to let them go to my head.

It’s great to push yourself on skis. Pushing yourself on skis because you feel like you need to for an Instagram video, though, is less fun. In the end, nice carved turns on a groomer may not break the internet, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worthwhile.

Keep skiing how you like to ski.
