Record-Breaking Snowfall in Banff Resorts

Record-Breaking Snowfall in Banff Resorts

Lake Louise Ski Resort broke a 75-year-old December record for snowfall with 282cm for the month; it’s the single-snowiest winter month on record at Lake Louise since 1970.

Sunshine Village enjoyed the  fifth-snowiest winter month in history with 268cm of snowfall from December 1 – 31, 2025. Its largest fall for 35-years.

The third Banff resort of Mt. Norquay reported 120cm in December 2025, compared to 10cm in December 2024 and 32cm in December 2023.

Storms have continued into January, with 38cm at Lake Louise, 46cm at Sunshine Village  and 6cm at Mt. Norquay over the past seven days.

Here was Sunshine Village on Thursday 8th January

“This season is a reminder of why Banff National Park delivers such consistently great snow,” said Rachel Wilson, director of marketing at SkiBig3, the umbrella organisation for the resorts.

“Our northern latitude, colder temps, and high-alpine terrain translate to lighter, drier snow,  reliable conditions, and one of the longest seasons in North America.”

Regular PlanetSKI readers will know our editor, James Cove, is based in the area for a couple of months, staying in Canmore.

It seems he has chosen the right winter for an extended stay.

Here’s his latest snow report video from Thursday 8th January:

There have been further reports in our regular Snow Reports since we arrived.

Plus a rolling blog on our Canadian adventures as we go curling, watch ice hockey, visit Calgary and do much else besides:

There is also new terrain at Lake Louise  – Richardson’s Ridge.

The terrain addition at Richardson’s Ridge opened three months ahead of schedule and PlanetSKI was amoung the first to ride the lift on its opening day.

The previous December snowfall record at Lake Louise Ski Resort was set 75 years ago during the 1950-1951 ski and snowboard season.

Lake Louise has 226% of season average snowfall as of December 31st 2025.

The previous snowiest months at Sunshine Village:

  • January 1971 – 299cm
  • March 2012  – 298cm
  • December 1979 – 274cm
  • November 1990 – 274cm

December 2025 was the fifth snowiest month on record with 268 cm (106 inches) recorded.

Mt. Norquay is reporting 156cm for the 2025-2026 season-to-date.

It is a little-known resort compared to its two more famous neighbours, but we love it.

Some small resorts are utter gems, and this is one of them as James reported earlier:

The three resorts that make up SkiBig3 enjoy one of the longest ski seasons in Canada.

You can ski all three areas on one lift ticket until late April, with Lake Louise Ski Resort and Banff Sunshine remaining open into May.

PlanetSKI is in the area until the second half of February so do keep an eye out for our further posts.

We are also hitting the road and visiting Jasper in Alberta +  Revelstoke & Kicking Horse in British Columbia.

Plus a few others that take our fancy.

We are self-funding the Canada trip and retaining all editorial independence so we can post as we see it without influence and spin + do what we want.

Airfares, accommodation, lift passes, car hire and day-to-day living expenses are covered by PlanetSKI.
