Les Arc-hitecture-s
Les Arcs is putting its architectural legacy centre stage this winter, inviting visitors to explore one of the Alps’ most influential modernist resorts through a series of guided tours celebrating its unique design philosophy.
More than fifty years after its creation, the resort remains a benchmark of Alpine architecture, renowned for its clean lines, bold urban planning and seamless integration into the mountain landscape.
Recognised in 2016 as “Remarkable Contemporary Architecture”, Les Arcs stands apart for buildings that appear to grow from the slope itself. Wood‑clad façades, low‑impact silhouettes and carefully framed views reflect the humanist vision of pioneering designer Charlotte Perriand, whose influence continues to shape the resort’s identity.
Working alongside architect Guy Rey‑Millet, Perriand championed an approach rooted in humility, sustainability and respect for the mountains principles that remain central to Les Arcs’ character today.
The resort’s architects turned the challenges of steep terrain and harsh climate into opportunities for innovation. By prioritising local materials and technical ingenuity, they created structures that are both functional and deeply connected to their surroundings. The result is a resort designed not only for efficiency and comfort, but also to encourage social interaction and a sense of community.
This winter, visitors can discover that legacy through a programme of guided tours led by expert lecturer Jean‑Marie Chevronnet. Each tour offers a different perspective on the resort’s design story.
At Arc 1600, guests can explore some of Les Arcs’ most striking viewpoints and learn how the earliest concepts were developed, from terraced layouts to the principle of “no overlooking neighbours”. The Archi‑Ski tours at Arc 1600 and Arc 1800 take the experience onto the slopes, revealing how the resort’s architects mastered the art of building directly into the mountain. A special night‑time walk at Arc 1800 adds a new dimension, showcasing the resort’s architecture under winter lights.
