Winter Driving: Staying Safe Around Snowplows

Safety around snowplows.

Driving in the winter has a lot of dangers, from slippery roads to low visibility. Staying safe on the roads means slowing and leaving plenty of space between your car and any others to account for longer breaking distance. That’s pretty easy to understand, but encountering snowplows on the road can add a decent amount of confusion to those who aren’t used to winter driving. This snowplow safety video from the Colorado Department of Transportation provides a great, easy-to-understand guide to staying safe around snowplows.

It’s quite simple, really. If you encounter snowplows on the road, specifically on a Colorado road, give it plenty of space (at least 4 car lengths). Don’t try to pass them or tailgate. They won’t speed up because you’re there and they likely won’t move over. Getting stuck behind a snowplow might add some time to your morning commute, but it comes with much more clear and safer roads.
