NHL Team Delays “Apres-Ski” Night Following Crans-Montana Tragedy

Winnipeg, Manitoba — Due to the ongoing mourning of the Crans-Montana fire, an NHL team has delayed its après-ski night.

The Canadian Press reports the Winnipeg Jets have delayed their “après-ski” themed night, which was scheduled for Friday night against the Los Angeles Kings. The plan was for the first 5,000 patrons to enter the arena to receive ski goggles. Friday will be a national day of mourning in Switzerland to honor the victims of the fire. The promotion will now be held on March 10th, when the Jets face off against the Anaheim Ducks.

The Jets have had a rough start to the season. After making a solid postseason run, the Jets have struggled due to notable injuries and perhaps thinking that signing an old Jonathan Toews would make them Cup contenders. The Jets are currently last in points in the NHL.

The Crans-Montana Tragedy

Early on New Year’s Day, a fire occurred at the Le Constellation bar near the Crans-Montana ski resort. The fire, which was likely caused by sparklers attached to bottles, spread quickly through the bar. Forty people were killed, and 116 individuals were injured by the fire. The bar reportedly hadn’t been inspected in the past five years, resulting in skepticism of the local government among the community.
