More Details Emerge Regarding Catastrophic Crans-Montana Fire

Crans-Montana, Switzerland — Switzerland is in mourning after a New Year’s Day fire resulted in many casualties at a Crans-Montana bar.
Authorities believe the fire was caused by sparklers attached to champagne bottles. One of the sparklers either got close to or touched the ceiling. With the ceiling being composed of highly flammable acoustic foam, it started a rapidly moving fire (a flashover) that resulted in an immense number of casualties. Since the initial shocking announcement and videos, more details have emerged regarding the fire. Here’s a breakdown of the Crans-Montana bar fire.
When and Where Did the Fire Happen?
The fire occurred in the early morning of New Year’s Day. It occurred at Le Constellation, a bar situated in the Crans base area, close to the Crans-Montana Route Télé gondola.
Who Owns The Bar?
Le Constellation is owned and managed by Jacques and Jessica Moretti. The couple owned this bar along with a few other restaurants in the local area.
Reportedly, the bar was inspected three times over a ten-year period. The couple is reportedly devastated by the fire.
“Everything was done according to the rules,” said Jacques Moretti to the Tribune de Genève.
On Saturday, authorities announced that they have launched an investigation into the two owners of the bar. According to the Valais police, they’re being investigated for “negligent homicide, negligent bodily harm and negligent causing of a conflagration.” As is the case in the US, they’re innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.
A key thing to note: while Vail Resorts owns the ski infrastructure at Crans-Montana, they are NOT the owner of this bar.
Casualties
40 people were killed, and 116 were injured in the fire. All of the individuals who died or were hurt have been identified over the past day or so. Among the people who died were individuals as young as 14 years old.
The minimum drinking age in Switzerland is 16, so it’s become a concern that people who were underage were able to get in.
