Kilde Back Racing
Norwegian ski racing legend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde made an emotional return to World Cup racing at Copper Mountain in Colorado yesterday, nearly two years after his devastating crash in Wengen.
Norway’s former overall champion, who suffered terrible injuries in January 2024 at the Lauberhorn downhill, finally stepped back into the start gate on Thursday’s super-G. The 33-year-old crossed the line 1.25 seconds behind winner Marco Odermatt, tying for 24th place, but the result mattered little compared to the symbolism of his comeback.
Kilde’s crash in Switzerland left him with severe calf damage, torn shoulder ligaments, and months of rehabilitation complicated by infection and multiple surgeries. His long road back culminated on Thanksgiving Day in Colorado, where he described simply being on the course as “a win.”
Fiancée Mikaela Shiffrin, watching from the finish area, was visibly moved as Kilde completed his run.
