Trails Reopen Following Wildfire At Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

The Oak Flat and Uplands Trails trails in Colorado’s Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which have been closed since July 10th, 2025, have reopened following the completion of necessary repairs.
Both trails were closed during a full park closure enacted by the Superintendent as wildland firefighters battled lightning-caused fires throughout the park. The North Rim closure was rescinded on July 30th while a partial reopening of the South Rim began on August 29th. Crews continued to address hazards throughout the fall, allowing for further openings as the months passed.
Repairs were necessary along the entire Oak Flat Trail, a 1.56 roundtrip trail, and to the portion of the Uplands Trail between the Oak Flat trail’s junction with the South Rim Road near the campground. By Superintendent’s Order, those closures are now rescinded and those trails are now open to the public.
Run-ooff conditions may force those trails to close again temporarily in the spring. All previously closed burned-over areas are now open to the public, damaged facilities, unstable rock, and falling trees have forced some closures to stay in effect. The Rim Rock Trail, the Uplands Trail between the Rim Rock Trial and the South Rim Road junction, East Portal Campground, South Rim Campground, and the Gunnison and Tomichi wilderness routes remain closed.
