This Stunning Film Shows Exactly What a 48-Hour Heli-Ski Trip Feels Like
Nailing good ski conditions for a film or a ski trip can be a fickle beast, so when it is good, you’ve gotta move quickly. While this is something most skiers can understand, no one knows it better than professional athletes and filmmakers.Â
There’s truly no chaos like the chaos of getting a text saying, “Can you get here tomorrow?” especially when “here” is Alaska.Â
Luckily, Amie Engerbretson is no stranger to ski travel or the chaos of a professional ski career. When it comes to throwing it all in a bag and going—skis, boots, poles, goggles, beacon, probe, shovel, check—it’s muscle memory for the Tahoe-based skier. Her new film, Daydream, shows just that.Â
Engerbretson got a last-minute call to head to Alaska for 48 hours of heli skiing last spring, and like any powder-hungry skier would, she rallied fast. Less than 12 hours after getting the call, Engerbretson found herself dropping into Alaska’s dreamy terrain and epic snow.
Built entirely from footage captured over just two days, Daydream captures the essence of the most surreal days of skiing.

If you’ve ever been on a trip so hectic, or perhaps fraught with jetlag, you know that by the time you get home, it can all feel like a dream.Â
Daydream does an incredible job at capturing that essence. The film takes viewers alongside Engerbretson to Third Edge Heli, whose base sits between the Tordrillos, Chugach, Talkeetna, and Kenai mountain ranges, which are known for some of Alaska’s steepest, deepest, and most famous ski lines.Â
As always (and despite the short notice), Engerbretson laces line after line, further contributing to the film’s dreamy feel. After all, there’s no better dream than one about skiing bluebird powder.Â
