Mammoth Mountain Opens With Top-to-Bottom Skiing and More Than 50 Runs

Good things come to those who wait, apparently.

After a short delay spurred by low snowfall, Mammoth Mountain, California, opened today, November 20, 2025 with top-to-bottom skiing.

According to the mountain’s lift status page, seven lifts and 54 trails are open. One lift, Chair 23, is on weather hold at the time of writing this. More lifts and terrain are expected through the weekend, Mammoth said.

The opening presents a dramatic turnaround for Mammoth. The ski resort originally planned to open on November 14. Then, it pushed that opening back to November 15 in the hopes that it could take advantage of an incoming storm. But the storm didn’t produce as much snow as hoped, and Mammoth delayed again, eventually pinpointing November 20 as its targeted opening.

Since then, temperatures have fallen and the snow has started to stack up. Mammoth’s season total is sitting at 36 inches. Almost a foot of snow has arrived in the past three days.

A few more inches are expected today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service, followed by warmer and sunnier weather.

Mammoth is far from the only Western ski resort taking a circuitous path to opening day this season. Several other mountains, from Idaho to Utah, have pushed back their opening days amid a stretch of mild temperatures. In Utah, Park City, Alta Ski Area, Deer Valley, Solitude, and Brian Head have all tweaked their schedules.

Brian Head, however, is poised to open on Friday, November 21.

The delays have begun to impact the mountains around Lake Tahoe. Both Heavenly and Northstar planned to open on Friday, but now say they won’t open then. Neither has shared new targeted dates quite yet.

Chris Tomer, a meteorologist known to skiers for his daily forecasts spanning the West and the Northeast, is eyeing solid snow accumulations in British Columbia and southwestern Colorado by November 24. Much of the West, however, isn’t slated for significant snowfall, according to Tomer.
