Wisconsin's Largest Ski Resort Has Snowmaking on Full Blast With Hopes of Opening Soon
Midwest skiers rejoice, the (manmade) faucets are on at Wisconsin’s largest ski resort!
Those frigid, midwest temperatures have made their way to Rib Mountain, and Granite Peak has fired their snow guns up full blast. While the ski area hasn’t officially announced their opening day just yet, according to social media comments, they’re hoping for sometime around Thanksgiving, conditions dependent.
Granite Peak hasn’t seen much natural snow yet this year, but luckily, they were able to fire up the snow guns on November 7, 2025, and have already had a few early season windows to get what looks like a significant amount of snowmaking done.
Forecasts are showing that warmer temperatures, unfavorable for snowmaking, could hit the ski area through next Tuesday, but things should cool back down right around Thanksgiving Day.
Based on the resort’s recent social media posts, Granite Peak has a pretty impressive snow making system. It appears they’ve got snow guns up pretty much the whole length of the mountain, which makes kind of an L-shape, and are starting to see quite a bit of accumulation. You can check out one of their snowmaking videos below and keep reading for more.

Granite Peak is one of a handful of independently owned mountains still going strong in the midwestern US.
Midwest Family Ski Resorts, which is owned and operated by Charles Skinner and the Skinner family, also own Minnesota’s Lutsen Mountain, which boasts the largest ski resort in the midwest, and Michigan’s Snowriver Mountain Resort. Granite Peak was also one of the first ski areas in the midwest to install a high-speed 6-pack chairlift.
Midwest Family Ski Resorts recently announced a $12M investment in infrastructure updates across their three mountains. For Granite Peak, this included installing new and enhanced lighting across the mountain for an improved night skiing experience as well as new snowmaking equipment which allows the ski are to make more snow, faster.
Granite Peak opened for the 2024/25 season on December 6. The resort has promised to keep folks updated on their 2025/26 opening day announcement and is working hard to prepare the resort in the meantime.
