Olympic Truce Resolution for 2026 Winter Games to be Introduced
The Olympic Truce resolution for the Milan-Cortina Games will be formally submitted to the Member States by the Government of Italy in close collaboration with the IOC, the International Paralympic Committee and the Milan-Cortina 2026 Organising Committee.
Milan-Cortina 2026 President Giovanni Malagò will introduce the resolution to the UN General Assembly on behalf of Italy.
It will be followed by interventions from the Member States and remarks by the IOC President, Kirsty Coventry.
The ancient Games in Olympia began with a temporary peace, halting conflicts so athletes and spectators could travel safely.
The Olympic Truce or ‘Ekecheiria’ was established in Ancient Greece in the 9th century BC.
The tradition was revived in 1992, following a decision to protect the interests of athletes and sport in general, and to contribute to the search for peaceful and diplomatic solutions to global conflicts.
This initiative reaffirms the Olympic Movement’s commitment to the ideals of respect, friendship, and fair play, extending beyond the competition arenas.
