Small British Columbia Ski Area Is Adding New Trails

Nakusp, British Columbia — One of the bigger terrain expansions happening in Canada for this upcoming winter is happening at a ski area with a 500-foot vertical drop.

This offseason, Summit Lake Ski & Snowboard Area has been working on expanding its terrain network. Several videos have showcased the work done this summer. There are really well-produced videos, and even feature a talking dog. I didn’t know dogs could talk!

Three new runs have been cut. Galena Contractors have been brought in to cut down trees and other hazards.

This terrain will be available for ski tourers who aim to earn their turns. It’s possible in the future that a surface lift could be added to service the new trails.

In addition, the base lodge has undergone some renovations this offseason. The Penticton Herald reported in September that the exterior siding, windows, roofs, ventilation, kitchen appliances, and deck have been replaced. A larger deck means that Summit Lake will be able to host more events and concerts. Repairs to the lodge’s structure have also been made.

Recent Struggles

The additions follow what has been a difficult stretch for the ski area. Summit Lake is operated by Nakusp Ski Club Association, a non-profit that uses volunteers to operate. The club receives funds generated by tax revenue from the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK). However, this amount has been insufficient due to rising insurance costs. According to the Penticton Herald, insurance costs have increased from $25,000 CAD in 2021 to $36,000 CAD in 2024. This has led to expenses exceeding revenue, a trend that has been ongoing for at least the past five years.

Although it’s too late to increase taxes this year, discussions are underway to do so for next year. In the meantime, a grant could help them cover the funding gap.

About Summit Lake Ski & Snowboard Area

Situated 16km from the small village of Naksup, Summit Lake is run by volunteers from the non-profit Nakusp Ski Club Association.

Prior to this offseason’s terrain expansion, the ski area featured 8 trails, 30 skiable acres, 2 lifts, and a vertical drop of 500 feet. On Friday nights, the ski area hosts night skiing. There’s also a cross-country/snowshoeing trail. The lodge consists of a cafeteria, tables, and restrooms. There’s also a rental shop on site. Future plans may include more activities during the offseason, such as mountain biking.
