New York Ski Area Announces It Won’t Operate This Winter

Warrensburg, New York — After an inspiring comeback over the last few years, it sounds like the future of Hickory Ski Center is uncertain.
Last week, Hickory Ski Center announced that it doesn’t plan on opening to the public this season. This includes those who want to skin up the mountain. Additionally, the lodge is undergoing a renovation, so it won’t be open. However, they are still offering the mountain for rentals.
The announcement seems to hint at a move towards something else, but it’s unclear what it will become.
It appears that new management has arrived. The Storm Skiing Journal reported in October that it was under new management and wouldn’t operate this winter.
This follows what had been solid momentum during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. After facing difficulty securing lift approvals, Indy Pass and Unofficial Networks teamed up to help them operate for the 2023-24 winter season. Winter eventually arrived, bringing some great skiing. Although not operating as frequently, there were a few days of skiing operations during the 2024-25 season. One of the successes from this era was that management was able to expand Hickory’s offseason activities, which included hiking and disc golf.
Let’s hope this isn’t the end of lift-serviced skiing at Hickory.
About Hickory Ski Center
Opened back in 1945, Hickory Ski Center is regarded for its rugged atmosphere. With no snowmaking, its steep terrain is only open when there’s sufficient snowfall. The ski area features 17 trails, 4 lifts, and a vertical drop of 1,200 feet. After not operating for nearly a decade, it reopened its slopes during the 2023-24 season. Summers have been busier there in recent years, with activities such as hiking and disc golf.
