This Historic Ski Area Is Bringing Back Free Skiing for a Second Year Straight

For the second year in a row, Storrs Hill, a small mountain in New Hampshire, will offer free skiing.

To ski for free, visitors can simply stop by Storrs Hill’s ticket booth and claim a ticket. Storrs Hill doesn’t offer equipment rentals, but the nearby Omer and Bobs Golf and Ski Warehouse does.

Storrs Hill’s free skiing program was made possible by the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, land grants from Tomapo Farm, and the City of Lebanon, which owns Storrs Hill.

The ski area plans to open on December 26, 2025, with public ski days on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, including evening skiing on Fridays and Saturdays. It advised visitors that its operations are heavily dependent on the weather and volunteers, so they should check Storrs Hill’s social media pages for updates.

Storrs Hill isn’t Whistler Blackcomb, Park City, or Big Sky, of course. It sits at the edge of Lebanon, which has about 15,000 residents. The ski area has humble terrain and infrastructure: one platter lift, 20 acres of slopes, and seven trails.

What Storrs Hill does have, though, is a rich history. Founded in 1923, Storrs Hill first became home to a rope tow lift in 1935. That makes it one of the oldest continuously operating lift-served ski areas in the U.S.

Two years after Storrs Hill’s founding, a ski jump called the “Scrape” was built there—so named because jumpers who went too far would scrape their stomachs on the landing. Today, the mountain still has ski jumping facilities. Alpine racing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin also spent time training at Storrs Hill during her youth, going on to become the winningest racer ever.

While free skiing is a rarity, other major resorts have announced ticket deals as the 2025-26 season arrives. At Jackson Hole, for instance, lift tickets are only $35 on December 5, 2025, in honor of Ski & Ride in Jeans Day.
