This Unexpected Ski Resort Could Win Best Ski Resort in North America

When you think of the resorts most likely to win ‘Best Ski Resort in North America,’ giants like Whistler Blackcomb, places with legendary snowfall like Alta, and Colorado moguls like Vail come to mind.

But what about a midwest ski area so chock-full of character it can hardly be contained by Michigan’s Upper Peninsula?

Mount Bohemia (Boho), Michigan, which is known for it’s crazy snowfall, expert terrain, and quirks like the shuttle busses that only play ABBA and colorful chairlifts, is vying for the top spot in USA Today’s Readers Choice Awards for the Best Ski Resort in North America. The mountain took the #2 spot in 2024 behind Snowbasin Resort, in Utah. Bohemia has also made the top 20 every year for the last eight years, and even landed the top spot in 2023.

Bohemia is the only resort in Michigan in the reader-voted contest to go up against ski areas in Colorado, Utah, and British Columbia.

Despite the location of this unlikely gem, Boho averages 273 inches of snow per year and has 625 skiable acres and 900 ft. of vertical drop. The mountain, which opened in 2000, also has some of the best pass and ticket deals in the game. A season pass to Bohemia is just $112 with no blackout dates, and a lifetime pass (which is good for 75 seasons) is $1399, less than some single season passes at other mountains.

New for this season, Mount Bohemia has added a mineral pool, which is double the size of, but the same temperature as the current outdoor hot tub, and a new steam room.

If you think Mount Bohemia deserves the #1 spot, you can vote daily until Monday, November 10, 2025 at Noon ET. The results will be tallied and announced on November 19, 2025.

Other ski areas in the running include Alyeska, Aspen Snowmass, Deer Valley, Grand Targhee, Jay Peak, Mt Bachelor, Steamboat, Winter Park, Smuggler’s Notch, and more.
