Maine Ski Area Could Close For Good After This Upcoming Winter

Hermon, Maine — Is this upcoming winter the final ski season for Maine’s New Hermon Mountain?
This week, New Hermon Mountain shared a social media post detailing season pass sales. Things then take a turn for the worse in the second half of the paragraph, detailing that if a new owner isn’t found soon, this will be the ski area’s final season.
In 2022, the ski area went on the market due to ownership’s desire to retire and move on from the ski industry. However, the Whitcomb family hasn’t been able to find the right buyer, which has put additional pressure on ownership. Add in a snowmaking pumphouse fire last year, and things have been challenging to maintain. If it’s not sold, the owner may redevelop the land into housing.
While you may not have heard of this ski area, New Hermon Mountain is important for Maine’s ski industry due to its proximity to Bangor. This is Maine’s third-largest city by population, meaning that if this were lost, the closest ski area to the city would be the Camden Snow Bowl, with a drive time of 1 hour and 20 minutes.
With this added pressure, I do feel like somebody in the community will step up to save the ski area. Could it be a new non-profit or a local Bangorite? We’ll have to see. For now, if you ever wanted to ski Hermon Mountain, this could be your last chance to do so. Lift tickets last season only cost $55 for adults, so you’re not putting the house on the line by spending a day there.
The real estate listing is still active. The ski area once had a price point of $5 million, but it’s now gone down to $2.1 million. Only $2 million away from me being able to afford it! You can view the listing here.
About New Hermon Mountain
Situated ten minutes away from Bangor, New Hermon Mountain (it also goes by Hermon Mountain for some reason) serves as a feeder hill to the bigger options in Maine. The ski area features 20 trails, 3 lifts, a vertical drop of 350 feet, and night skiing. Outside of skiing and riding, there’s also a tubing park. In the summertime, there doesn’t appear to be much going on there, so maybe that’s a future business opportunity for new ownership.
