Could This Be the Last Season for Hermon Mountain Ski Area?
A small local ski area in Hermon, Maine, may not survive beyond the 2025-26 season.
In a pre-winter post on Facebook earlier this month, Hermon Mountain Ski Area announced that season passes were on sale, with prices increasing on November 1, 2025.
The ski area’s ownership also had hard news to share, noting that if Hermon Mountain doesn’t sell before the upcoming winter ends, it’ll no longer offer skiing in the future.
“We are still hopeful that someone will be able to purchase it and keep it a ski area before the end of this coming season but if not we will be closing it down and looking for alternatives to selling it, i.e. house lots or something like that,” the post reads. “For now though we look forward to one more season of great snow, skiing, snowboarding and tubing!”
The post also said Hermon Mountain has been on sale for “quite some time.”

In 2022, local news outlets reported that the ski area’s owners, the Whitcomb family, were planning to retire and sell it.
At the time, Hermon Mountain was listed for $5 million. A listing on bizbuysell.com now says the asking price is $2.1 million. According to the listing, the 69.62-acre property includes three lifts, 100% snowmaking coverage, and a 600-foot tubing park.
The listing added that the lodge’s mezzanine could be improved to include a bar or restaurant expansion. Last December, Hermon Mountain saw an unexpected setback when a pump house caught fire.
According to New England Ski History, Hermon Mountain has operated since the 1960s. The Whitcombs formally acquired the ski area in the 1980s, adding infrastructure like a two-seater chairlift and a new base lodge.
Will someone come and save Hermon Mountain? Hard to say. In the meantime, winter’s on the way, and the ski area has at least one more swan song to play.
