Mammoth Mountain's Ski Season Is Less Than 50 Days Away
Skiers, it’s almost time to start thinking about snow: opening day at Mammoth Mountain, California, is less than 50 days away.
The ski resort aims to become one of the first to open in California, firing up its lifts on November 14, 2025, conditions permitting.

November, of course, is often hit-or-miss when it comes to snow conditions.Â
So, when the month arrives, skiers might find a few thin trails flanked by brown grass at Mammoth. They could, however, also spend the 14th skiing in bottomless snow. Regardless, opening day is always a sign of good times to come. Powder, while hoped for, isn’t necessary to get the stoke going.
At most ski resorts, advance opening dates aren’t guaranteed. Warm weather—or worse, rain—can always prevent snowmaking, forcing a delay.
But Mammoth Mountain’s stayed remarkably reliable over the past few decades. According to a website that tracks the ski resort’s historical opening days, the Mammoth Snowman, Mammoth Mountain hasn’t opened later than November since 1986, when it first welcomed skiers on December 11.

Where else can you ski in November in California?
The Lake Tahoe heavyweight Palisades Tahoe is eyeing a November 26 opening date. Heavenly and Northstar—both part of Lake Tahoe’s Vail Resorts contingent—plan to open a few days earlier, on November 21. Kirkwood, another Vail Resorts mountain, has a targeted opening date of December 5.Â
Adding to the excitement is the recent arrival of snow in the Lake Tahoe area. Yesterday, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe shared footage of snowflakes flying across its webcams.Â
Typically, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe is the first Lake Tahoe ski resort to open for the season. Last winter, they got the party started on November 8, 2024.Â
Meanwhile, snow has already fallen at ski resorts across Colorado. There, some mountains like Keystone hope to open in October.
Our recommendation? Take advantage of the last few hot days while you can. Go swimming or go for a hike. It won’t be long before the 2025-26 season kicks off.Â
