Maine State Seeks Public Assistance After Vandalism Of Iconic Mount Katahdin Summit Sign

Law enforcement officials with Baxter State Park in Maine are seeking assistance from the public in relation to a recent act of vandalism that occurred on the Baxter Peak summit sign on Mount Katahdin.

The letters “H.M.” and “J.M.” were recently carved into the middle of the Baxter Peak summit sign, the sign designed to mark the highest point on Mount Katahdin. Baxter State park requests any information related to the incident, whether you witnessed the act, have observed any social media posts from the person or people responsible, or have heard any word of who might be responsible.

Additionally, Baxter State Park asks the people or person responsible to come forward. Anyone with information are encouraged to contact Baxter State Park Headquarters at 207-723-5140, seven days a week between 8AM-4PM.

Mount Katahdin is the highest mountain in the state of Maine, stretching to a summit elevation of 5,269 feet. Translating to the “Greatest Mountain” in Penobscot, Katahdin is held sacred by the Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot nations. Baxter Peak is the northern terminus of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
