Baby Orca Joins Surfers On New Zealand Waves

Surfers are frequently joined by different wildlife, from fish to birds to dolphins, but orcas hopping on a wave alongside surfers is a fairly new one.
These surfers were enjoying the waves when a young orca decided to join them in the water. According to their own disclaimer, the drone pilot attempted to notify the surfers when it first spotted the orca, but the surfers didn’t see the pilots signal. Eventually more people on the beach noticed the orcas and were trying to grab the surfers’ attention with waving, but they didn’t understand what was going on. Once they did notice the orca, it was too late and they couldn’t do anything but wait for it to leave them.
Despite the nickname of “killer whales”, orcas really don’t pose much of a threat to humans. There have been no documented cases of an orca intentionally harming a human in the wild. There have been 4 recorded cases of orca-caused human deaths in captivity, with 3 involving the same orca. That said, you should always give orcas plenty of space and never attempt to approach a wild animal. It’s dangerous both to you and to the animal.
