Sundance Ski Resort Founder Robert Redford Passes Away At Age 89

Robert Redford passed away peacefully today at 89 years old at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah “the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved.” Best known as one of the most accomplished actors of his generation, Redford was also an avid skier and was fundamental in founding Sundance Mountain Resort. Redford bought the land now known as Sundance Resort in 1969 envisioning the careful growth of a community committed to the balance of art, nature and community.
Robert Redford was also the founder of the organization behind the Sundance Film Festival which celebrates independent cinema. Redford’s nonprofit organization The Sundance Institute, founded in 1981, will continue to sponsor the Sundance Film Festival which annually showcases independent films in Park City, Utah.
Among Redford’s incredible acting credits is the 1969 sports drama Downhill Racer where he played American downhill skier David Chappellet vying for a spot on the USA Olympic team. The film’s portrayal of ski racing inspired many athletes of the day and remains a time capsule into early ski racing.
