Australian Skiers Come Across “Spiny Anteater” On The Slopes

Echidna at Thredbo in Australia.

T-Bar riders at Thredbo Resort in Australia were presented with a rather interesting native earlier this month, with the country’s most widespread native mammal wandering across the snow covered route.

Often called spiny anteaters”, echidnas’ feed mostly on ants and termites. They’re covered in sharp spines made of keratin which provide an effective defense against predators. Echidnas are most frequently found in deserts, forests, and coastal areas, but they are known to be able to tolerate and live in snowier conditions.

Like any wild animal, echidnas should be given plenty of space at all times, no matter where you run into them.
