Early Season Snow Blankets Colorado Peaks

After some of the peaks near Winter Park Resort got their first snow of the season last week, it was only a matter of time before more of the state started to see hints of winter.

Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, and Breckenridge got at least a dusting of snow over the weekend (September 13-14, 2025), as did the Flat Tops, near Steamboat Springs. While totals weren’t large enough that it’s not worth publishing, they did warrant OpenSnow’s beloved Colorado meteorologist, Joel Gratz popping onto the site to say ‘SNOW!’ (Colorado skiers in particular will know what a joyful moment this is.)

OpenSnow’s Gratz said September snowfall at high elevations is fairly typical for Colorado and will probably melt quickly, but it is not indicative of how the winter will shape up. However, it’s still pretty exciting to see those peaks dusted with snow as a reminder that winter really will be here before we know it.

Keystone and Arapahoe Basin hope to spin lifts as soon as possible, even in October, if conditions allow. Keystone’s state-of-the-art snowmaking system has an automated technology to begin snowmaking ASAP. A-Basin has already rolled snowmaking guns onto the hill and is ready to fire them up. Breckenridge is not far behind the others with a November 7 opening date.

Copper Mountain, who also got it’s first flakes over the weekend, is also slated for a November 7, 2025 opening day.

Keep doing your snow dances and drinking your Ullr, winter’s on it’s way, it might just need a little more convincing.
